The Future Starzz Field Hockey program operates age-related instruction and teams under the name of DC Starzz. The DC Starzz field hockey program was started several years ago out of a desire to bring field hockey to the Nation's Capital! At the time, only two local jurisdictions did not offer field hockey in their local public school systems: Prince George's County, MD and Washington, DC. While almost every area college and or university in the same area offered field hockey as a college sport for women, from the club level through Divisions II, II and I level athletics.
Initially designed for girls ages 10-14, the program soon expanded to include both boys and girls ages 5 - 14, and from throughout the region (PG County/DC/ and close-in Northern Virginia) because of its popularity. Training and competition are conducted year-round. Enrollment is conducted on a seasonal basis. Sessions are held on Saturdays, (tournaments and games may be held on Sundays as well) except during school and other holidays.
The program is free to all, regardless of ability to pay, although parents/guardians are occasionally asked to pay fees for special events. Every youngster who indicates a strong interest and commitment is given free equipment (ball, stick, shin guard, mouth guard). Those who become devoted participants are also issued uniforms (2 printed t-shirts with their own numbers and shorts) and placed on competitive teams. As experience, maturity and age are reached, referrals are made to appropriate local area club teams for youngsters who wish to continue at a higher level of competitive play.
Field trips are taken to area college games and tournaments. In addition, the coaching/training staff and players have given demonstrations and participated in exhibitions at various venues around the metropolitan area for: area public, private and charter schools; the DC Parks and Recreation Department's summer programs; and at several special events. In fact, our records indicate that the DC Starzz program has introduced the sport of field hockey to more than 3,000 youngsters since 2006!
Our program coaches, trainers, chaperones and director include current and former high school, college and adult field hockey players with numerous years of experience, including international competition. Our assistant coaches are current high school players on highly competitive local teams.
Besides United States Field Hockey Association support of an initial equipment grant, we have received contributions and donations from individuals, some small businesses, the Washington Field Hockey Association, C & J Sports, and the Bethesda Chevy-Chase Field Hockey Alumni Association, just to mention a few. We have received in-kind contributions of equipment from the George Washington University Field Hockey Club, the American University Field Hockey program, the National Cathedral School for Girls field hockey program, the C. Milton Wright High School varsity field hockey program, and other individuals. And finally we have received technical assistance from American University, the Washington Field Hockey Umpires Association, Southeast Field Hockey Club team and coaches, and legions of individuals and field hockey enthusiasts who would like to see field hockey succeed in the Nation's Capital!
